Plot

Steve is upset about his lack of popularity. He notices that girls seem attracted to guys with dogs, so he asks his parents for one. Stan gets Steve a 19-year-old dog, because it was alive during the Reagan administration. One night, Roger makes a noise and Stan goes downstairs, thinking it is an intruder. Stan shoots the intruder, only to find out that he just accidentally killed Steve’s dog.

They bury the dog, and Stan tries to make up for it by rigging the school election and discrediting his opponent by showing an altered photo of her in bed with the Jack in the Box Man (who Stan tells Steve, and Roger later discovers, is still in their basement) so that Steve wins and becomes the school president. Once elected, Steve uses his attribution as student body president to impress the head cheerleader, Lisa Silver, turn the lockers into ediblechocolate ones, and changes the word “period” to Steve. He soon gets corrupted with power, but believes that he is succeeding, until Lisa dumps him when he first tries to kiss her. Steve goes crazy and holds the school hostage. Stan sneaks into the school and gets Steve to stop by revealing that he was unpopular in high school as well.

On another front, the audience is introduced to Roger, an alien who saved Stan’s life in Area 51. As repayment, Roger lives with the Smiths, but his presence is not known by the CIA, Stan’s employer, and the world. Since Stan fears that the CIA would erase his and Roger’s memories if the alien were ever discovered, Roger is forced to live in confinement at the Smith’s. Roger is also addicted to sugar, and Francine puts him on a forced diet when his weight causes him to break a chair and the dinner table. In order to get around Francine’s strict control of junk food in the house, Roger strikes a deal with Hayley to do her homework in exchange for her smuggling sweets to him. It works at first, but on the night before the deadline for one of Hayley’s papers on Henry Kissinger, Roger has too much sugar and passes out without doing the work. He and Hayley are able to come up with an excuse to make her teacher give her an extension on the paper’s deadline (they dig up Steve’s dead dog and Hayley tells the teacher that she just lost her dog). After this scare, however, Hayley decides to discontinue her agreement with Roger. Roger, noticing Steve’s frustration in getting a girl, becomes his adviser for dating, in exchange for a “buttload” of Twinkies. Roger also reveals that every seven hours an ooze shoots out of his body, “like clockwork”.

Steve is frustrated with his low profile. He asks his parents for a dog after noticing that girls appear to be drawn to guys who own them. Stan gives Steve a dog that is 19 years old because it lived through the Reagan years. Stan rushes downstairs one night upon hearing Roger’s disturbance, believing it to be an intruder. After shooting the intruder, Stan discovers that he has just unintentionally murdered Steve’s dog. After they bury the dog, Stan tries to make up for it by showing a manipulated picture of his opponent in bed with the Jack in the Box Man—whom he tells Steve is still in their basement—and manipulating the school election to discredit her. This allows Steve to win and become the school president. After winning the election, Steve transforms the lockers into edible chocolate ones, renames the term “period” to Steve, and impresses Lisa Silver, the head cheerleader, with his achievements as student body president. Before Lisa deserts him as he tries to kiss her for the first time, he quickly becomes corrupted by power and thinks he is succeeding. Steve loses his mind and kidnaps the school. By letting Steve know that he was also unpopular in high school, Stan, who has broken into the school covertly, encourages him to stop.

Roger, the extraterrestrial who rescued Stan in Area 51, is introduced to the audience on another front. As payback, Roger moves in with the Smiths, but the CIA, Stan’s employer, and the general public are unaware of his existence. Roger is sent to live in captivity at the Smith’s because Stan worries that the CIA will destroy his and Roger’s memories if the alien is ever found. Francine forces Roger, who also has a sugar addiction, to follow a diet when his weight breaks a chair and the dinner table. Roger and Hayley make an arrangement whereby Hayley does her homework in exchange for her sneaking candy to Roger, circumventing Francine’s severe rules against junk food consumption in the home. It works at initially, but Roger overindulges in sugar the night before a deadline for one of Hayley’s papers on Henry Kissinger, and he passes out instead of finishing the task. By unearthing Steve’s deceased dog and having Hayley inform the teacher that she had lost her dog, he and Hayley are able to convince her teacher to give her an extension on the paper’s due date. But Hayley makes the decision to break up with Roger after this incident. Upon observing Steve’s dissatisfaction with his lack of success in dating, Roger offers him a “buttload” of Twinkies in exchange for being his dating advisor. According to Roger, his body releases a substance “like clockwork” every seven hours.
