Episode 20 | Roger ‘n’ Me

Plot

Stan goes to Atlantic City for the bachelor party of an old college friend and Roger stows away in Stan’s suitcase. It turns out Stan’s friend actually did not want Stan to come, leaving Stan and Roger to spend time together. After sneaking into the hotel’s hot tub, a drunk Stan agrees to a sex-like probing ritual performed by best friends on Roger’s planet to share memories.

Embarrassed, Stan refuses to bring up the event and hides it from Francine, much to Roger’s dismay. Stan accidentally runs Francine over while arguing with Roger in the car and she can only be saved by a $178,000 operation. With Roger knowing all of Stan’s secrets, the two compete on Best Buddiez!, a game show to win $200,000, but they lose because Stan knows nothing about Roger. Instead, Roger simply probes the doctor in order to learn how to do the operation himself.

Meanwhile, while shopping for Steve’s new speedos, he meets Trudy, a girl he fancies; Hayley meets her match in a guy named Miles who has a cousin who goes to the same college she does. But unfortunately, their interests are both dating. Deciding to give them a “push towards happiness”, the siblings resolve to break them up. They place an earring in Miles’ pocket to make Trudy suspicious, then call Trudy to record her words and reorganize them so they could call Miles to think that she’s having an affair with a Brazilian guy named Jim. For the final stage, the two set up the couple in the park, thinking they are secretly meeting their lovers. Hayley and Steve figure that once the two break up, they will sweep in and comfort them. But the latter have a fight and Miles accidentally burns his face on a barbecue pit, horrifying Trudy enough to fall into a creek where she is attacked by an alligator. Hayley and Steve then agree to never speak of what they did.

Two weeks later, Roger has successfully done the operation but Francine acts like a vegetable. Hayley and Steve do their best to get her up to speed.

This episode stands out as my favorite from season 1, with everything clicking into place, especially the dynamics between Stan and Roger, who are both exceptionally on point. Unlike earlier episodes where the humor often missed the mark, this one had me laughing consistently, showcasing Roger’s potential as a richly layered character. Much like Bender from “Futurama,” Roger embodies a similarly complex mix of traits: both are self-destructive, egocentric alcoholics with a penchant for chaos, yet they manage to garner sympathy due to their deep-seated emotional fragility and sensitivity. While Roger eventually evolves into a far more psychopathic figure than Bender—more effeminate and unabashedly deviant—his portrayal in this episode is endearingly sympathetic and relatable. His penchant for becoming emotionally entangled in his obsessions, escalating situations into wildly inventive and chaotic scenarios, is on full display here, notably leading to Francine requiring brain surgery in a quintessentially Roger-driven plotline.

My fondness for this episode is partly due to its focus on the evolving relationship between Stan and Roger. Watching Stan’s growing affection for Roger adds a refreshing layer to their interaction, making ‘Roger ‘n’ Me’ a pivotal episode for character development, particularly for Roger. It effectively lays the foundation for his character’s future trajectory, highlighting his unmatched versatility and capacity to drive any story forward. Roger emerges as the series’ wildcard, its breakout character, and, despite Klaus’s presence, its true mascot.

The episode’s plot itself is also noteworthy, cleverly tackling the inevitable “Roger probes Stan” storyline with engaging pacing and an unexpected twist involving Francine’s accident. Everything about this episode screams “American Dad” at its best, signaling a moment where the show truly finds its voice and identity. It’s a clear indication that while there may still be room for growth, the series has solidly established its footing and distinct character.
